ATTENDANCE AND ABSENCES

Students are encouraged to be in school, on time, each day. We discourage absences for any reason aside from illness. Regular school attendance facilitates continuity in the educational program.

Excused absences are enumerated under California Education Code 48205 and include the following reasons:

  • Due to his or her verified illness.
  • Due to quarantine under the direction of a county or city health officer.
  • For the purpose of having medical, dental, optometric, or chiropractic services rendered.
  • For the purpose of attending the funeral services of a member of his or her immediate family, so long as the absence is not more than one day if the service is conducted in California and not more than three days if the service is conducted outside California.
  • For justifiable personal reasons, including, but not limited to, an appearance in court, attendance at a funeral service, observance of a holiday or ceremony of his or her religion, attendance at religious retreats, or when the student’s absence has been requested in writing by the parent or guardian and approved by the principal or a designated representative pursuant to uniform standards established by the governing board.

NOTIFY SCHOOL OFFICE AND/OR TRANSPORTATION

If a student is going to be absent from school, parents/guardians are expected to call the office and leave a message before 6:30 a.m., explaining the reason and length of time the student will be absent, if this is known. 714.998.6571 ext. 2200 or ext. 2003.

We encourage parents/guardians to make doctor appointments after school hours so that the student’s day is not disrupted.

 ABSENCES AND POINT ASSIGNMENTS

In the case of an excused absence or tardiness, the teacher will determine the weekly point total average based on the days and periods the student was in attendance that week. In the case of an unexcused absence or tardiness, a “0” will be earned for every period the student is not in school in his/her assigned class.

Parents/guardians should be aware that excessive absences might contribute toward a child's failure to make satisfactory progress in school.

Three (3) unexcused absences and/or six (6) excused absences will initiate truancy notices to be sent home and to the school district.  Additional absences may lead to a district School Attendance Review Board (SARB) referral and jeopardize student's placement at Olive Crest Academy.
